The following transcript contains an excerpt from an interview with Rod Argent, prior
to the release of 'Classically Speaking'.
'I've always loved classical music - even in the early '60's when my first band The Zombies
was the centre of my life, I saw nothing awry in listening to the Bartok
string quartets while adoring The Beatles' 'Revolver' or 'Rubber Soul'; while
recording 'Hold Your Head Up' with Argent or listening endlessly to Cream's
'Disraeli Gears' I was simultaneously discovering Stravinsky's 'Symphony of
Psalms' and finding that Tippett's 'Child Of Our Time' would make all the hairs stand up
on the back of my neck. And I've always loved Bach!
Yet, as a self taught player, I never really considered the path as a classical performer to be
open to me - until a dear friend and colleague, himself a wonderful performer in the field,
persuaded me to seriously apply myself. And once I started, I was hooked! This album is the result -
and how marvellous it is to be able to use as the material some of my very favourite pieces
of piano music - along with three of my own compositions. It's been a labour of love - and I
really hope it's only the start!
